October 2007 Jim Beam Tasting Journey

Jim Beam has been in business for over 200 years and makes the best selling bourbon in the world. The Beam family is the most storied in American Whiskey making and Beam’s have worked not only at The distillery that bears their name but at virtually every bourbon distillery in Kentucky. The Beam legend stretches all the way back to 1788 when Jacob Beam settled in Kentucky and began making whiskey from the excess corn that he collected from his own water driven mill.

Jacob Beam first began producing a whiskey made from corn, rye and malt and the first bourbon was born. The whiskey was named after Bourbon County in Kentucky that is now known as ‘America’s Whiskey’.

The business was then past down from father to son and eventually the legendary Jim Beam started working for the company. He took over the family distillery in 1894 when his was 30 and ran the distillery for the next 52 years.

The company was forced to close during prohibition and the Beam’s became active in a number of other businesses until they were able to establish a new distillery in 1934. The Beam legend continued to grow when Booker Noe, whose mother was a Beam, took over the distillery and became a whiskey making giant in his own right. In 2007, Fred Noe became the latest Beam to have his face put on the Jim Beam label.

Today the company makes the largest selling bourbon in the world and has found great success with their Small Batch bourbons, most notably Knob Creek and Booker’s.

The distillery still uses the same vintage yeast strain created by Jim Beam in 1934.
