Whisky
Tasting Journey: February 2007
By Brett
Calish & Glen Karlovitch
A Whisky Journey Shared with Friends |
Let’s face it; whisky is
best when it is shared with friends. In
that “spirit”, we decided to kick-off
2007 with a free Whisky Guild tasting
event, January 15th. To those of you
that came and shared our evening, we
enjoyed your company. To those who
didn’t, our next one is right around the
corner. And here’s what you missed:
Glentauchers 14 year old Gordon &
Macphail
An easy drinking, flavorful malt
from the Speyside region. Matured 14
years in oak casks, this dram has a
soft, silky body making it an easy
drinking everyday whisky.
Nose: Soft. Lots of oak and vanilla,
hints of clove
Body: Medium & slightly oily
Finish: Medium to long, vanilla
dominates. Also citrus (oranges &
grapefruit)
A smooth easy drinking Speyside
malt. |

Rosebank 1990 14 year old Gordon &
Macphail Connoisseurs Choice
This expression is full of
subtle flavors without the over
powering grassy character that’s the
trademark of many Lowlands. Aged 15
years in refill sherry casks, this
whisky still retains the best of the
Lowland characteristics.
Nose: Subtle, dry grass,
slightly smoky, chamomile
Body: Light, dry and a little
oily (almost like a dry chardonnay)
Finish: Short to medium, very
smooth, lavender but very subtle
An exceptional Lowland malt
from a now silent distillery. Grab
one before it’s too late. |

Benromach 21 Year Old
A straightforward, sweet dram
from the Speyside region. This
slightly sherried dram can stand on
its own, or be an accompaniment to a
hearty meal.
Nose: Big & beefy, sweet,
port wine, some chocolate, perfumed
Body: Light, fresh
Finish: Lingering and dry,
heather and light sherry
A big unique malt from the
Speyside region |

Dallas Dhu 27 year old cask strength
Dun Bheagan
An incredible dram that’s finished
in Rum casks. The whisky is very
complex and the rum doesn’t over
power it. The nose was full of
oranges and vanilla and of course
rum. The body was medium to chewy
and the finish is long and amazing.
Had a creamy quality that we loved.
This one had us at hello.
Nose: Complex, Seville oranges,
Bananas Foster, vanilla ice cream,
rum
Body: Medium to chewy
Finish: long, sweet and smooth, the
rum lingers in the back of the
throat; after this, a second wave,
with honey and toasted almonds
Special! |

Glenrothes 30 year old The
MacPhail’s Collection
Complex and deep, this malt has some
character. By far the best
Glenrothes we’ve tried and one that
should be a must for any serious
whisky fan.
Nose: Deep & complex, woodsy,
sherry, fresh oranges, mixed nuts,
cherry candy, vibrant
Body: Smooth, full & chewy
Finish: Very subtle and short but
extremely flavorful: sherry and
citrus predominate
Complex and amazingly, smooth and
subtle. |

Springbank
31 year old 1974 Dun Bheagan
Finished in sherry, this Springbank
is special and unique. The nose was
sweet from the sherry with under
currents of light peat. The finish
was long, dry, and lightly peated.
Even though it’s aged for 31 years
it maintains that wonderful
Springbank oiliness in the body.
Water opens it up nicely.
Nose: Big, sherry, seaweed & brine
hidden under oak, iodine, peat &
smoke. With water, hints of candied
nuts and baked apples
Body: Oily
Finish: Long, dry, and lightly
peated, wisps of sweetness, elegant
This cask strength whisky, can be
appreciated by connoisseurs and
novices alike. Impressive!
