Our Top Winter Drams

During the winter months I’m forced to tune up the snow blower, buy rock salt and watch my heating bills skyrocket. It’s also the time I like to break out my favorite winter drams that help keep me warm and ‘happy’. I tend to reach for big, sherry matured whiskies that are think, sweet and syrupy. Nothing passes the long winter months better then a good book, a cigar and good warming dram.

Cheers,
Glen

Dailuaine 16 Flora Fauna

Caution: This is not a summer dram – Drink this only in winter! Very thick, sherry sweet, almost syrupy. You still catch oak and malt, but it is so big and full that it is definitely not the refreshing aperitif you’d want on a hot day. While usually not my style, there’s something about Dailuaine that just makes you smile.

Inverarity Ancestral ‘Balmenach Distillery’

This is one of our favorite Speysides. Think and rich that’s well balanced and not overly sweet. Everything you could hope for in sherry matured whisky. We owe a huge thanks to Royal Mile Whiskies for turning us on to this ‘Sherry Monster’. The perfect winter dram!

Glenfarclas 25

A big fruity nose (raspberries?), with peppermints, vanilla, an underpinning of hay. A medium-to-large body, with bittersweet chocolate on the palate. The finish is long and lingering, and somehow reminded me of dandelion wine. This is a whisky that “oozes” maturity. Super!

Glen Grant 34 Duncan Taylor

A fantastic whisky that throws you for a loop as you gaze at its dark color. A very unique whisky with a floral sherried character. It coats your mouth like a Guinness beer. Exceptional neat even though it’s cask strength.

Aberlour A’Bunadh ‘the origin’

Big and intense, this cask strength powerhouse is a must for the liquor cabinet. Make sure you add water and let this one explode in your mouth. Syrupy sweet with a huge sherry character. This one will sneak up on you so be careful.

The Dalmore Cigar Malt

A very distinctive whisky that has a nice juicy texture. Reminds me of sitting in front of a fire on a cold winter’s night.
