Gas pump

Scientists at Scotland's Napier University in Edinburgh have created a new fuel for cars, which they say is not only a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to gasoline, but also produces 30 percent more power than the popular biofuel ethanol. The university researchers are responsible for developing a chemical process that takes the two main by-products of whisky production - pot ale liquid and draff - and turns them into butanol, the new fuel.

Glenmorangie reveals the newest addition to its Private Edition range with GLENMORANGIE FINEALTA

The Glenmorangie Company announces the release of Glenmorangie Finealta, the latest addition to the Private Editionrange of limited edition expressions by Glenmorangie’s award-winning Whisky Creators. Finealta, pronounced ‘Finalta’, is Scottish Gaelic for ‘elegant’. It is an exquisite recreation of Glenmorangie based on a recipe dating back to 1903.

altThe century-old recipe was uncovered in the Distillery’s archives. Dr Bill Lumsden, Head of Distilling and Whisky Creation, comments, ‘Glenmorangie decided to recreate this recipe so that we, and whisky connoisseurs, could have a taste of this historic Glenmorangie expression. We followed the recipe meticulously, which included marrying whiskies of different ages and different cask types. The final result is a whisky of such depth and distinction that we selected it as the second release in Glenmorangie’s exclusive Private Edition.’

Whisky aficionados will delight in Glenmorangie Finealta’s distinctive vanilla and citrus notes that one expects in a Glenmorangie expression, while enjoying Finealta’s unique rich taste of mandarin segments, lime and hints of cherry brandy combined with a spicy palate of nutmeg and ginger. The final touch is a surprising one – a hint of peat creating a subtle smokiness with layers of gentle floral scents and depth to discover. The light touch of peatiness originates in an era when the Glenmorangie Distillery dried its malted barley in a peat-fired kiln.

Distillery archives show that during the early 1900’s this Glenmorangie dram was served in the American Bar of The Savoy, London’s most prestigious hotel, during La Belle Époque and at the height of Art Nouveau, the first modern art movement of the 20thcentury. The packaging design for Glenmorangie Finealta is inspired by Art Nouveau, which had a style for incorporating elements of nature such as floral and plant motifs into artwork, architecture and home furnishings.

Daniel Baerntuther, Manager of the American Bar at The Savoy, says, ‘We are very excited with the creation of Glenmorangie Finealta, which was first enjoyed by The Savoy’s guests at the turn of the 20thcentury. It is wonderful that the introduction coincides with The Savoy’s reopening on 10.10.10 as this will allow our new guests to also experience this special Glenmorangie expression. In restoring The Savoy, we have been careful to preserve the atmosphere, elegance and unashamedly old-fashioned glamour of the hotel and Glenmorangie Finealta fits perfectly.”

The popularity of Glenmorangie single malt whisky grew beyond Scotland during the early 1900’s when it was shipped around the world to whisky enthusiasts spanning America to Asia.

Bottled at a strength of 46% ABV, and non chill-filtered to impart a full body and texture, Glenmorangie Finealta will be made available to global travel retail in early September.

Glenmorangie, Scotland's Favorite Single Malt Scotch Announces

OU KOSHER CERTIFICATION

New York, June 08, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — The Glenmorangie Company and Moët Hennessy USA are proud to announce that Glenmorangie Original, Scotland’s favorite single malt Scotch whisky, has become kosher-certified by the Orthodox Union (OU), the world’s largest and most respected kosher certification agency. Additionally, its pioneering new expression, Glenmorangie Astar, has also become kosher-certified. Glenmorangie's sister distillery, Ardbeg has also received OU Kosher certification for its Ardbeg 10yr old expression.

New packaging and promotional materials bearing the “OU” symbol will be distributed nationwide over the next few months.

“At Glenmorangie we take great pride in producing Scotland's favorite single malt whisky, using the finest Scottish barley and hand selected American white oak casks of only the highest quality. The OU kosher certification will bring our iconic brand to an entirely new consumer base that can now enjoy our products,” Brian Cox, Glenmorangie U.S. Brand Director.

The Orthodox Union rigorously monitors all aspects of production. It supervises the process by which the whisky is created, examines the raw ingredients used to make Glenmorangie and regularly inspects the distilling and bottling facilities to make sure that its standards are met.

“We are very pleased to have Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch Whisky become the first major single malt scotch brand to attain OU certification. It was also gratifying for OU to guide the Glenmorangie Company through the certification process and bring this famous single malt brand to the growing kosher market place,” remarked Rabbi Eliyahu Safran, OU Kosher Vice President of Communications and Marketing. “It was rewarding for OU Kosher’s team, headed by Rabbi Nachum Rabinowitz and Dr. Avraham Meyer, to collaborate with the Glenmorangie team to bring these renowned products to an ever-growing kosher market place.”

For further information, please e-mail David Blackmore, Glenmorangie U.S. Communications Manager, at glenmorangiepr@mme.net.

PRODUCT NOTES

Glenmorangie Original, is bottled at a strength of 43% ABV and chill-filtered, to enhance the smooth but complex flavors. It is aged for a minimum of ten years in superior quality American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels, made from forests carefully and sustainably managed for the Glenmorangie Company. These casks are filled with the Glenmorangie spirit, distilled to an unparalleled level of complexity, aroma and smoothness in the tallest copper-pot stills in all of Scotland. The result is a smooth yet complex malt whisky, revered and rewarded across the globe for generations. Glenmorangie Original consistently outscores its direct competition, scoring 94 points for the past 6 years in “The Whisky Bible”. Jim Murray, the author of the Whisky Bible and world renowned whisky expert describes Glenmorangie Original as “Complexity at its most complex.”

Glenmorangie Astar, is one of the newest expressions from the famed Glenmorangie Distillery, and is the first whisky in the world to be matured in ‘designer casks’ sourced from selected, air seasoned, slow-growth American white oak.

The creation of Astar began in 1985 and is the brainchild of Dr. Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s Head of Distilling and Whisky Creation. The wood used to mature the whisky is carefully selected, slow-growth, fine-grained American white oak, found specifically in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. The wooden ‘staves’ crafted from the oak is left in the open air to season for at least 24 months. This long wait, coupled with the wood’s inherent porosity, allows the white oak wood to breath and soften, adding the first elements of flavor that will contribute to the final spirit. The staves are ‘coopered’ into oak casks and toasted to contribute further flavors of almond and coconut. The casks are then filled with Tennessee whiskey and set aside to mature for four years, smoothing out any rawness in the wood, and at the same time releasing luscious undertones of vanilla.

These ‘designer casks’ are then ready to be emptied and shipped to the Glenmorangie Distillery in Tain, to be filled with Glenmorangie’s renowned, delicate and complex spirit, uniquely derived from Scotland’s tallest stills. The casks are finally laid down for many years in dark, cool, earth-floored warehouses for a long, slow maturation. Glenmorangie Astar is bottled at 114.2 proof, 57.1% ABV which represents the whisky in its most natural form, and allows the drinker to explore the fullest spectrum of aroma, texture and flavors.

Dr. Bill Lumsden comments:
“At Glenmorangie we are particular. We believe up to 60% of the flavor of the whisky comes from the wood and our quest for the very best wood is unparalleled. It is difficult to sum up years of passion and commitment! But I would describe Glenmorangie Astar as everything a single malt should be – it is the result of an incredible journey: the pursuit of perfection.”

Irish whiskey's appeal to younger drinkers has shielded the sector from global recession and positioned it for strong growth over the next four years, according to Datamonitor.

Irish whiskey sales are set to rise in value by 9% annually up to 2014, said the market research agency today (24 May).

Datamonitor has predicted that global Irish whiskey sales will reach US$762.8m in 2013, compared to $488m in 2009 and $255.7m in 2004, according to figures released to just-drinks.

"Irish whiskey has successfully set itself apart from the general market which has traditionally been dominated by older drinkers," said Datamonitor analyst Vicky McCrorie.

Irish whiskey constitutes only a drop of the $13.3bn global whisk(e)y market, but will continue to strongly outpace sales of Scotch, Canadian and American whiskies over the next four years, Datamonitor said.

Canadian whiskey is set to have the second strongest sales growth rate, of 3% annually, while American whiskey will grow by 2% annually and Scotch by just 0.2%, Datamonitor said.

The US market offers the best opportunities for Irish whiskey, according to the agency.

"Irish whiskey is an example of a European brand trading on the fact that it’s different to what is already on offer in an established market like the US," said McCrorie, picking out Pernod Ricard's Jameson brand for particular praise.

Datamonitor research shows that there is an opportunity to target younger drinkers in the US, with 41% of current whisk(e)y drinkers over the age of 55.

Average per capita spend on Irish whiskey in the US in 2009 was US$1.55, compared to $107 in Ireland and $4.79 in the UK, according to Datamonitor figures.

Global exports of Scotch whisky reached record levels last year, according to recent figures, despite a drag in the Asia region.

Citing HM Revenue & Customs data and individual company declarations, the Scotch Whisky Association said this morning (15 April) that total exports of Scotch were up in value terms by 3% year-on-year in 2009, to GBP3.13bn (US$4.83bn).

Export volumes increased by 4% worldwide, with the equivalent of 1.1bn 70cl bottles of Scotch shipped.

The association credited the US – up by 13% - and Brazil – with growth of 44% - as driving the industry's performance. In Asia, however, exports fell by 9% in value terms, thanks to a steep 24% drop in export values to South Korea.

The association's chairman, CEO of Diageo Paul Walsh described the performance in 2009 as “impressive”, adding: “The industry is continuing to invest and sustain its efforts to secure fair access to export markets. We look to the next UK Government to work with us to build on Scotch Whisky’s success in the future.”

William Grant & Sons is expanding its Glenfiddich Distillery Edition Scotch
whisky out of travel retail and into specialist retailers across
key markets worldwide.

Markets chosen to sell the 15-year-old, 51% abv single malt Scotch
include France, UK, US and Germany, a spokesperson for family-owned
William Grant & Sons told just-drinks today (20 May)

The non-chill filtered whisky will also be rolled out more widely
across the travel retail sector, having previously only been
available at select airports.

Matured in American and European oak casks, including Oloroso
sherry casks, Glenfiddich Distillery Edition is priced at
around GBP37.99
